The inspiration for this song comes from an ancient biblical story, a tale of the undisputed power the enchantment of the female form has had since the beginning of time. The song parallels the past with today, and demonstrates that what is going on now has always been. It all began with a dance, the dance of the 7 veils; performed by a young girl named ‘Salome’. Salome’s Mother was secretly in love with John The Baptist, who was imprisoned at the time by the hand of King Herod. John rebuked the Queen’s advances and as a woman scorned she sought vengeance. She arranged for her daughter to dance for the King who promised the girl anything she wanted in return. Coerced by her Mother, the young girl performed a tantalizing dance and for her reward, requested the head of John The Baptist on a silver platter.
Today there are similar situations happening all over the world. Maybe not resulting in death, but men and woman are exchanging pain for pleasure on many different levels. This song seeks to raise questions on how we as a society are raising our daughters, are we using them for our own self interests? Do the roles imposed upon them benefit them in society and media or are we trading their glory for gain?
Many artists through out history have paid tribute to ‘Salome” and the video below displays their works of art set to MADELEINE’S unique musical interpretation.
